Whether you’re a greenhouse or gardening enthusiast or a
professional grower, you’ll find something useful at the
“Getting
Started in the Greenhouse Business and Propagation School” Feb.
1-3 in Griffin.

The three-day event will be at the Georgia Experiment Station.
It
includes two days of intensive classroom sessions and one of
hands-on ornamental plant propagation workshops. It’s sponsored
by Georgia Flower Growers Association.

Business School

The business school Feb. 1-2 will cover step-by-step guidelines
on starting a greenhouse business. It will include selecting
bedding and perennial plants, scheduling and growing and
marketing crops. Veteran greenhouse professionals will share the
secrets of their success. They’ll discuss some common mistakes,
too.

Greenhouse and nursery owners, landscape professionals and
University of Georgia faculty will present the topics sure to
provide the background, insight and basic skills needed to start
a business. Participants will take home a Greenhouse Manual
filled with extensive, detailed information from the
lectures.

Propagation School

The propagation school Feb. 3 will cover everything you need to
know about basic and advanced propagation, or growing new plants
from existing ones.

Two workshops are offered:

  • A half-day session for beginners will introduce the
scientific background of plant propagation. It will cover topics
from basic cutting physiology and rooting hormones to details on
specific systems. It also includes a half-day session of
    hands-on
learning in how to propagate vegetative annuals, foliage plants,
    perennials, herbs and semiwoody ornamentals.

  • For advanced participants, topics include propagating roses,
cacti, gesneriads, orchids and hydrangeas. Hands-on sessions are
    in the afternoon.

At the end, you can take your day’s efforts home and watch your
new plants grow. Reservations are required, and seats are
limited. So register early. The fee is $105 for GFGA members or
$130 for nonmembers. To sign up, call (770) 229-3477.
