2010 Tobacco Research Report
Like other agricultural enterprises, the tobacco industry has experienced a great deal of change in recent years and continues to evolve. Many challenges exist, including those associated with plant disease, soil fertility, insects, changing markets and global competition, all of which impact profitability. This report contains the most recent results of 2010 tobacco research and field trial programs at the University of Georgia.

Fruits and vegetables begin to deteriorate after they are harvested and separated from their growing environment. The rate of deterioration defines how long they will be acceptable for consumption. This is known as “shelf life.” To preserve the quality of fruits and vegetables and maximize profits for growers, it
is critical to control the temperature of fresh produce and minimize the amount of time that products are exposed to detrimental temperatures. This publication describes several precooling methods that can be used to reduce field heat and heat of respiration in common fruits and vegetables grown in Georgia.|

Of the 10.2 million tons of poultry litter generated annually in the U.S., Georgia generates approximately 2 million tons. Over the years, poultry litter has been used for composting, pelletizing, and converting to electricity, steam and biogas; however, the most common use has been land application. Poultry litter has an organic fertilizer value in excess of $80.00 per ton based on current fertilizer prices (Ritz and Merka, 2009). This publication reveals the results of a survey conducted to assess the value and utilization of poultry litter among south Georgia poultry and crop producers.

Weed control is a critical component to successful sod production. The presence of weeds may reduce aesthetics, marketability and strength of turfgrass sod. Chemical control is often warranted. Weed management strategies with preemergence and postemergence herbicides are often modified in sod production to meet harvesting requirements and client demands. Herbicide selection may be limited due to economics or turfgrass tolerance; however, repeated use of a single herbicide chemistry may lead to problems with herbicide-resistant
weeds. This publication contains information about managing herbicide resistance in sod production.|
